Take a gander at this globe.
On most globes, the distance around the circle, you'll see there are light lines drawn vertically and on a level plane.
The matrix is comprised of lines of scope, or parallels, and lines of longitude, or meridians.
Lines of scope run on a level plane the world over and characterize how far north or south an area is from the equator; the equator is a fanciful line that is equidistant from both the North and South Poles that separates the Earth into northern and southern halves of the globe.
