Negative acceleration is called retardation. If the velocity of a body is decreasing with respect to time, the acceleration is said to be negative. 

Retardation is the rate of decrease in velocity.

Retardation or de-acceleration is the rate of decrease in velocity. It is exactly opposite of the acceleration. In acceleration there in a increase in velocity but in this case there is decrease in velocity. If the acceleration of a body is -10 m/s^2 then in terms of retardation or deacceleration we will write it 10 m/s^2.

The SI unit of retardation is same as that of acceleration i.e. m/s^2 and its unit in CGS system is cm/s^2.
