Transpiration is the process of movement of excessive water from plant and evaporation from aerial parts. Aerial parts - Leaves, stems, flowers. Water is necessary for the plants but only small amount of water is accepted by plant through roots. This small amount of water is used for good growth of plant and metabolism.

Proper Definition : Exhalation of water through stomata is called as transpiration.

Transpiration is the loss of water from plant in the form of water vapours. The required water is absorbed by plant and the unwanted or excessive water is exhaled through leaves. Small stomatal pores are present on the leaves of plant and through these small pores, water is exhaled.

Role of transpiration : It keeps cell turgid. It cools the surface of leaves and environment also gets cooled. It also helps in movement of minerals from the soil to different parts of plant.

The water is warmed by the sun's heat and the water evaporates, passes out through many small stomatal pores present under the leaf surface.
