There are 3 configurations of transistors i.e Common base, common emitter and common collector , so accordingly they have their gain factor i.e. alpha (A) , beta(B) and gamma(Y) respectively.
The gain factor (A) of common base config. and gain factor (B) of common emitter are related as - A = B/B+1 or the reverse B = A/1-A.
So from the above 2 equation it is clear that Alpha (A) is always less than 1 (A<1) and Beta (B) is always greater than 1 (B>1).
