Synapse, also called neuronal junction, the site of transmission of electric nerve impulses between two nerve cells (neurons) or between a neuron and a gland or muscle cell (effector).

Electrical synapse and Chemical synapse.

(1) Electrical synapses are found in those places of the body requiring fastest response as in the defence reflexes.

(2) A chcmical synapse between a motor neuron and a muscle cell is called a neuromuscular junction or motor end plate.

There are three components of a typical chemical synapse.

(i) The pre-synaptic terminal

(ii) The synaptic cleft

(iii) The post-synaptic neuron
