The Veld is located on a plateau in a series of descending steps. The highest part is called the high veld. Its height ranges between 1200 m and 1800 m. The middle veld ranges in height from 600 m to 1200 m and below it lies the low veld which ranges from 150 m to 600 m.

The Limpopo, the Sabi, the Orange, the Vaal, are some of the rivers that drain the veld region. Waterfalls and rapids have been formed where the rivers drop down the plateau edges.
