Answer:

If the number of valence electrons is less than or equal to 4 so the valency is same as the number of electrons present. If the number of valence electrons are more than 4 then the valency is 8-(the number of valence shell electrons).

ANSWER:-

WHAT IS VALENCY?!

The number of electrons gained or lost by an atom from it's outermost shell in order to attain octet configuration is termed as it's valency. Moreover, valency is defined as the combining capacity of an atom.

If the valence shell of an element contains 4 or less than 4 electrons then it needs to loss electrons to attain it's octet. If the valence shell contains more than 4 electrons, then it needs to gain electrons in order to attain octet.

# Silicon (Si) -14:-

K = 2, L = 8, M = 4.

The outermost/valence shell has 4 electrons and thus it doesn't have octet. If it loses/gains 4 of its electrons then it attains it's octet.

Therefore, the valency of Silicon is:

8 - 4 = 4.

# Oxygen (O)- 8:-

K = 2, L = 6.

The valence shell contains 6 electrons. Therefore, it needs to gain 2 more electrons to attain it's octet. Therefore, the valency of Oxygen is:

8 - 6 = 2.
