The valency of an element is the combining capacity of that element. The valency is determined by the number of valence electrons present in the atom of that element. Thus, the valency of silicon is four.

The total number of electrons that an atom gains or looses in order to have a structure of the nearest noble gas is called as valency . Valency is of two types - electro positive and electro negative

Oxygen has an electro positive valency of 2
Silicon has electronegative valency of 2
