Determiners
The words which specify or determine the noun in a given sentence are called determiners.
Kinds of determiners are:
1. Articles (Definite and Indefinite) as Determiners
2. Quantifiers: They define the quantity or number of the noun.
Example:
- Can you add a little salt in the soup?
- Add some sugar to your tea.
3. Distributives
Examples:
- Each one of you will get an ice cream.
- Every responsible citizen must cast his/her vote.
These words express how things are distributed among people or in a group or individually. These words are called distributives.
4. Demonstratives: Demonstratives modify a noun. There are mainly four demonstratives – this, that, these and those.
Example:
- I like this cake.
- Sharpen these pencils.
5. Possessives: Possessives indicate the possession of singular, plural and even countable and uncountable nouns.
Examples:
- This is my pen.
- Let me refer your grammar book.
6. Interrogatives: Like all determiners, interrogatives come at the beginning of a noun to ask questions.
Example:
- Whose mobile phone was stolen?
- Which science fiction books do you wish to buy?
