Degree of unsaturation is a formula on the basis of which number of rings, double and triple bonds can be determined. The formula is:
DU= C−H2+N2−X2
C = number of carbon atoms
H = number of hydrogen atoms
N = number of nitrogen atoms
X = number of halides
It is useful because it tells about the structure of organic compounds. It helps us in predicting the structure of unknown organic compounds.
