Delhi was first declared the capital by the Rajput Chauhans in the middle of the twelfth century.Prithiviraj Chauhans was the most popular chauhan ruler.He was defeated by Muhammad Ghori in the second battle of Tarain.Ghori established the Muslim rule in India.
In the second battle of Tarain,Ghori was assisted by his trusted slave Qutbuddin Aibak.After Ghori won the battle,he appointed Aibak as the Governor of Delhi.Muhammad Ghori died in 1206 without any heir,so Aibak declared himself the Sultan of Delhi.The word 'Sultan' means the ruler of the region. The word 'Sultanate'means the form of Government or kingdom under the Sultan.
THE SULTANATE PERIOD
When Aibak occupied the throne of Delhi, the history of Delhi Sultanate began in India.It lasted for 320 years from 1206 to 1526 AD. Delhi became the capital of Sultans who conquered a large part of the Indian Subcontinent.During this period, there are 5 dynasties ruled in India.

1.Slave Dynasty: The first dynasty of the Sultanate period was known as Slave Dynasty.The founder of Slave Dynasty is Qutubddin Aibak who ruled 1206 to 1210.It is also known as Mamluk Dynasty.The word 'Mamluk' is Arabic means 'Slave'.Qutubbdin Aibak was a kind-hearted person and a pious Muslim.His generosity earned him the name of 'Lakhbaksh' which means 'the giver of Lakhs'.Aibak was a lover of Art and Literature.He made no distinction between Hindu and Muslim.He built two famous mosques,the Quwaat-ul-Islam in Delhi and Dhai Din Ka Jhopra in Ajmer.He also started the construction of famous Qutub Minar at Mehrauli in Delhi but it was not completed in his life time as he died in 1210 AD.
