This statement seems to have been made by a person with his nose out of joint. And who decides how good we are? There are good people in the world who don’t really care about government. Does that mean they deserve the very worst form of government there is? Actually when you are talking about other types of government it probably serves the citizen well not to be concerned about what the government does. Democracy is the only form of government where it makes a difference what citizens think about their government and act accordingly.

Involvement in government means you are aware of what government does and you want to have a vote in the matter. The weakness of a democratic government is that the people may become disinterested or decide that government is a leech or parasite on the people. It is possible that government becomes corrupt. It is also possible for the people to become corrupted against their government. But what the government does or does not do affects the people and when they begin to get pinched they will come out of their shell and do something to straighten things out.

We will see where it goes from here, but the election of Trump has stirred a lot of people into action. Especially the young and those who went to college to get a degree believing that would provide them with decent employment. It hasn’t and that to a large degree is the responsibility of politics.

Democracy will be tested from time to time. Up to now it has risen to the occasion. Whether it will this time remains to be seen. I believe it will.
