To demonstrate osmosis

Egg, beaker, acid (such as vinegar), water, needle

  1. Take some acid is a beaker and carefully place an egg so that it is fully immersed in the acid.
  2. Allow the egg to remain in the acid until the shell dissolves completely. The shell of the egg is made mostly of calcium carbonate, which will dissolve quickly in acids such as hydrochloric acid and a little slowly in acids like vinegar.
  3. Carefully take the egg out and wash it well to remove all the acid.
  4. Place the egg in a beaker full of water overnight. Observe what has happened to it the next day.

You will find that the egg has swollen considerably. If you carefully pierce the membrane with a needle, a jet of water will shoot into the air. Why do you think this happens?
