Thank you for asking this question. let me help you in finding the answer.

The main consequence is the water has its highest density at 4 degree celsius. This means the depth of the oceans have this temperature giving the life and animals the most stable conditions to live.
Solidifies water converted into ice , if water have a the density more than ice than all the sea water from base would have become ice and all the living creature living in it will eventually die.
Additionally warm water  causes tremendous change in the air current which transfer heat from equator to temperate zone. Hence, play role in controlling climate of whole earth.

Explanation:

Density of water varies with temperature. It is highest at 4 oC. At low temperature, When ice is formed, density is reduced. So At low temperature in ocean, A layer of Ice floats on water and below this layer, all aquatic species can survive. At high temperature,  Warm water of ocean causes vast currents which circulate heat from equator to temperate zone. Hence, play role in controlling climate of whole earth.
