Question :

Differentiate (x + a)² with respect to x

Solution :

Now, d/dx (x + a)²

    = 2 (x + a)²⁻¹ * d/dx (x + a)

    = 2 (x + a) {d/dx (x) + d/dx (a)}

    = 2 (x + a) (1 + 0)

    = 2 (x + a) ,

which is the required differential.

Rule :

    d/dx (xⁿ) = n xⁿ⁻¹
