Consider a body of mass m on the earth's surface. let the body be lifted to height h the work done in lifting, it is stored as potential energy in the body. In order to lift the body, a force is equal to its weight is required.
W=FS cos tita
here tita is 0
F=W=mg
W=mgh
this work done is stored as PE
PE= mgh
