The electric field due to a dipole on its equitorial line is not negative, make a dipole take a equitorial point draw electrostatic field lines one from + and other from - point charge extending directly from charges to the assumed point apply vector addition and get the answer there is nothing like negative or positive idiotic people (surrounded by them) give everything a name which is difficult to utter just feel the situation :)
