The dimension of Energy is given by

E=M^1L^2T^(-2)

Similarly the dimesion of Mass is given by M^1 and that of velocity of light(c) is given by L^1T^(-1).

Hence, to get the dimension of Energy, we must have the mass term with power of 1 and the length and tike terms to the power of 2 and (-2) respectively. Squaring the velocity of light satisfies the above condition. Therefore E=mc^2.
