Let a point O is placed on the common principal axis, f1 and f2 be the focal lengths of lenses L1 and L2.

here I1  means image formed by the first lensL1  act as a virtual object to the second lensL2 and the final image of the combination will be formed at I.

For only first lens:

1/f1 = 1/v1 - 1/u

for second lens:

1/f2 = 1/v - 1/v1

adding both equations:

1/f1 + 1/f2 = 1/v - 1/u

if the  lens combination is replaced by a single lens of focal length 'f' then

1/f = 1/v - 1/u

from above equations it is clear that

1/f=1/f1+1/f2
