Although opium is a very costly crop it does not have a very large home market thus it's agriculture becomes uneconomical.

Because it reduces the fertility of soil ,and after growing opium they doesn't​ able to produce another plant, It take a lot of time to grown and also Indian farmer doesn't get any  benefit by growing opium...
