Answer: The 2 ways are...

  1. Make sure that one flat side of the magnet is facing the compass. Observe the needle of the compass. The South end of the point will indicate the North Pole of your magnet. The North end of the point will indicate the South Pole of your magnet.
  2. By taking the magnet rapidly moving through a solenoid. The polarity of the solenoid can be changed by reversing the direction of the current. If we imagine that we are facing the coil end-on, then if the current flows in a clockwise direction, we are looking at the south pole. If the current flows in an anticlockwise direction, we are looking at the north pole. Hence, the polarity at A is north and polarity at B is south. When magnet is brought closer to the A end of the solenoid with the north pole, they repel each other because like poles repel each other.
