The pandemic has exposed the social condition of India, warts and all. The plight of migrant labourers and daily-wage earners is most striking. Pictures of the hungry millions prove that the lockdown was suddenly announced, without any foresight. It is sad to see people dying due to lack of preparedness; these people neither have masks nor sanitation facilities. It seems hunger will kill them before the virus does.
Social animal
While the lockdown is bringing a lot of news about people’s sufferings, we are also getting to know of common people who have come forward to feed the hungry and help the needy. This is the trait that makes humans different from other species. Altruism and social bonding are the basic tenets of our civilisation.
Cocooned life
In the days of such a global crisis and an unprecedented isolation, it shocks me to find countless social media posts that say how “depressed” and “bored” some people are! These people have all the luxuries of life, eating and cooking wholesome meals (and posting pictures of dishes too!), living cocooned in air-conditioned apartments and enjoying streamed movies on their electronic devices. They are hardly bothered about stranded labourers or hungry people.
