Bayaji a retired coolie of Bombay dockyard returns to his village by bus . He greets bhujaba at kadam's house . Bhujaba becomes furious on him because bhujaba belongs to upper caste and bayaji belongs to lower caste ( untouchable - mahar) . bhujaba warns him to remember the position. hahaha reaches his home . His mother , children , grandchildren felt happy to see him . all of them tried to search his box , for the gifts .

He says " look children , ours is a large family . Even at meal time, we have to eat by turns or set crowded knocking our knees together . I wish to build a house our of my earnings , and it has to be a storeyed house ; the usual three - portioned house won't be adequate for us ".

Description of Bayaji's house:

It is a congested house with one big room and an attached kitchen place. The room is filled with a couple of beds, two almirahs, a stand for hanging clothes and a little place to sit for lunch or dinner. However the hall is mud walled and small cracks appear here and there denoting the longevity of the construction and requirements of repairs. A small elevated thinna or ground outside for the outsiders or guests is very narrow. The roof is covered with old bamboo and thaches. There are about 10 members receding in the same small house. There is considerable place around the house and an iron fencing. There are some vegetable plants in the backyard and the some flowering plants in the front of the house on either side of the way from the gate. Some creepers extend to the roof of the house. The small single portioned house is hardly accommodating the members of the family. It can scarcely facilitate comfort to the whole family.
