Mutations are random and directionless while Darwin's variations are small and directional. According to Darwin evolution is gradual while Hugo de Vries believed that mutation caused species formation and hence known as saltation (single step large mutation).

Hugo de varies is a Dutch botanist and a geneticist. He was well known for the fact that he re established Mendel's various laws. Hugo De Vries thought that species evolve from other species by passing through a sudden, large changes of character traits. De Vries based his concept as the theory of mutation and he did some work on it using Oenothera lamarckiana which is the evening primrose.
