Located above the island of Balnibarbi, Laputa is described as being circular and about 4.5 miles in diameter, with an area of 10,000 acres. The island was 300 yards thick and had a bottom plate made out of adamant which was 200 yards thick. The adamant crust had the usual mineral compositions on it. The shape of the island was such that, the upper surface would slope down from the circumference to the centre, and would cause all the rain to flow down in the form of rivulets and collect at the centre, where lay four large basins, which were almost 200 yards away from the absolute centre of the island. At the centre there lay a chasm 50 yards in diameter, which continued into a dome like structure at the bottom, which served as an astronomical observatory, and contained within it the Lodestone, which was used to make the island move and fly about above the realm.
