A mutual association is found in between fungi and algae, leading to an entirely new organism called the lichens.Most are aquatic and autotrophic and lack many of the distinct cell and tissue types, such as stomata, xylem and phloem, which are found in land plants. Almost all the algal cells, except the members of Cyanophyceae, possess one or more vacuoles. Each vacuole is bounded by a distinct membrane called tonoplast.
