Before the revolution in France in 1789, the social structure of France was comprised of three estates. They were commonly known as the Head or the first estate, the following was the second estate and at the bottom was the Third Estate. The First Estate was incorporated of the prelacy or clergy, the Second Estate was for the noble class, and the member of the Third Estate were all others or commoners (peasants, artisans etc). All the members of the first estate were exempted from paying any kind of tax to the state, and the Second estate was bound to pay very few taxes, thus the Third estate was badly overtaxed by the kingship.
