The steam of the funnel is plugged with cotton. The dish is heated from below. As a result, ammonium chloride undergoes sublimation i.e :- it changes into vapours which pass through the holes or perforations of the perforated sheet. The vapours get cooled in the upper portion of the funnel and change to the solid form.
