SURFACE AREA OF A CYLINDER

  • Take a right circular cylinder of radius r units and height h units as in the given figure ( fig. is in attachment )

  • Take a strip of a paper of width h units and wrap it exactly once around the cylinder

  • unfold the strip shown in the figure ( fig. is in attachment )

We will find that the strip is a rectangle of length ( 2πr ) and breadth ( h )

therefore Area of curved surface of cylinder = area of paper strip ABCD

= l × b

= 2πr × h

Curved surface area / lateral surface area = 2πrh sq . units

Total surface area of cylinder = C.S area + ( 2 area of base )

= 2πrh + 2(πr)²

= 2πrh + 2πr²

= 2πr(h + r ) sq . units

Area of base = Area of circle = πr²
