We know that ethanoic acid and ethanol reacts in esterification reaction to give Easter. Take 2 ml of ethanoic acid in a test tube and 2 ml of pure ethanol (absolute alcohol). Add 2 drops of concentrated sulphuric acid into the test tube. Put this test tube in a beaker in hot water for about 5 minutes on a bunsen flame using a wire gauze. Pour the contents of the test tube into a 250 ml beaker containing 50 ml of water and smell the resulting solution. A sweet odour of ester is obtained .
CH3COOH + C2H5OH ---(Conc. H2SO4)---> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O.
CH3COOH- Ethanoic acid (acetic acid)
C2H5OH- (Ethanol) (Ethyl alcohol)
CH3COOC2H5- Ethyl ethanoate (Ethyl acetate)(sweet smelling Ester).
Thanks.
