when the mixture of water and kerosene oil is put in a seperating funnel, it forms two layers. water, being heavier, forms the lower layer in the seperating funnel whereas kerosene, being lighter, forms the upper layer. on opening the stop cork of separating funnel, the lower layer of water comes out first and collected in a beaker. the kerosene left behind in the seperating funnel. ot can be removed in a separate beaker.
