Take a magnesium ribbon. burn this magnesium ribbon in air. collect the ash dissolve the ash in water then dip a red litmus paper in the solution. The red litmus turns into blue color. this indicates the solution is basic nature. In the above experiment Magnesium is a metal. after burning in air it forms MgO (ash).Magnesium oxides on dissolving in water forms a basic solution called magnesium hydroxide. 2Mg+O2 →2MgO +2H2O →2Mg(OH)2 Non metallic oxides are acidic nature. Dissolve sulphur dioxide gas in water. test this solution with blue litmus. the litmus changes into red color. Indicates the solution is acidic in nature. SO2 + H2O →H2SO3
