Ester is formed as a result of heating an alcohol with a carboxylic acid in the presence of a dehydrating agent.
Take some ethanol in a test-tube with a few drops of H2SO4.
H2SO4 acts as a dehydrating agent.
When ethanoic acid is added to the mixture and heated in a water bath , the reaction takes place and ethyl ethanoate (ester) is formed.
C2H5OH + CH3COOH -------> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O.
But the water is removed by the dehydrating agent.
Hope it helped.....
