Take a bell jar with a bell attached to it.
Shake it. You will be able to hear the sound clearly.
Now connect a vacuum pump to it and evacuate the air from it and after than seal the jar with a cork. Make it air tight. Now shake the jar. You will see the bell shaking but you will not be able to hear the sound.
This is because sound needs a medium to propagate and it cannot propagate through vacuum.
