Jose Rizal , like Mahatama Gandhi, advocated non-violence to get Philippines' freedom from the Spanish rule. He was executed by the Spanish authorities in 1896,that brought about Philippine Revolution. He was buried in ordinary ground. But about 17 years after his death, his body was taken out and his vertebrae,which was hit by the single billet of the firing squad when he was executed, was removed and now displayed at the Rizal museum in Fort Santiago ( manali)
