military cause... the sepoys were unhappy because they couldn't rise in jobs and had no right to become an officer even they were meritorious.

immediate cause... the armies used Enfield rifle and a rumour spread that to prevent the cartridge from rusting it needed to be greased with the pig or cow fat . so the sepoys revolted against British as they didn't want to hurt their religion

An uprising in several sepoy companies of the Bengal army was sparked by the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle February, 1857. The cartridges were rumoured to have been made from cow and sow fat.
