7 February — Griffith's Anthony Murphy tried a slam dunk during an Indiana High School Boys Basketball match between Hammond and Griffith high schools when Hammond's Tim Echoles fouled him into a padded wall. Players, coaches, fans, and Griffith police spilled into the court for a multi-minute brawl. The game was cancelled on the spot and the Association of Indiana Highschool Athletics had both schools cancelled the rest of their seasons.

10 August–In a first round DFB-Pokal match between VfL Osnabruck and RB Leipzig, a lighter struck referee Martin Petersen in the back of the head, thrown by an Osnabrück supporter. The match has been abandoned and the win has been awarded to Leipzig later. At the time of the event, Osnabruck led 1–0 in the 71st minute.

2 March–PAOK midfielder Robert Mak was kidnapped in the penalty area during a semifinal match in the 2015–16 Greek Football Cup. After no late call for the second half of the match with Olympics leading 2–1, crowds were outraged in the stands and blazes were thrown on the field during 89th minute.

In 2017, football player Cam Newton made a sexist remark on a female reporter on being asked about the feeling on winning of his team – Carolina Panthers of Charlotte against New England Patriots in National Football League.

Instead of answering the straight forward question, he chose to comment on her knowledge about the sports which demonstrated how little he thought about women.
