Answers
Characheristics of 'Arid Soils' are :
(i) Red to brown in colour.
(ii) Sandy in texture.
(iii) Evaporation is faster, soil lacks humus and moisture.
(iv) Soil occupied by Kankar.
(v) Kankar restricts the infiltration of water.
The five distinct characteristics of 'Arid Soils' are :
1. Arid soil is water deficient as the soil is occupied by kankar (nodular calcium carbonate) which restricts the infiltration of water.
2. Arid soils are sandy in texture and saline in nature. Even common salt is obtained by evaporating the water.
3. Arid soil mostly lacks humus and moisture and thus evaporation is very fast.
4. The color of arid soil ranges from brown to red.
5. Besides calcium carbonate arid soil is dominated by secondary silica, gypsum, and soluble salts etc.
