The French East India Company opened a factory in the city of Pho Hien in 1680, that provided employment to local Vietnamese. With this, several other French establishments also came up. As a result, the lifestyle of the local people changed.
Roman Catholicism and Society of Jesus (Jesuits), spread in Vietnam as a result of missionaries who tried to convert as many local Vietnamese as possible and establish a native clergy. The colony of French Indochina was formed in 1887, with the main aim of protecting these missionaries.
The local Vietnamese were trained in military affairs and to build forts for the French.
