Lord dalhousie came to India as the governor of bengal in 1848. He was determined to extend direct British power over as large area as possible. His main policy of annexation was the doctrine of lapse. Under this doctrine when the ruler of the allying Indian state died without a natural heir, his state was not to pass on to an adopted heir as sanctioned by the age old tradition of the country.Some of the states annexed through this doctrine were - Jhansi,Satara,udaipur,nagpur etc.
