Characteristics of merger policy adopted by Lord dalhousie:-

Lord dalhousie arrived in India as the Governor-General in 1848. He implemented his policy of annexation as the 'Doctrine of Lapse'.Under this Doctrine, when the ruler of a protected state died without having a natural heir, his state was not supposed to be transferred to the adopted heir.

Till then this was actually the age-old tradition of the country. But under the new regime, such states were to be amalgamated into the British empire. eg. Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur were annexed in the British empire.

Contrary to age Old Hindu and Islamic it denied adopted children the right to inherit The throne, Satara (1848), Sambalpur (1849), Udaipur (1852), Nagpur (1853) and Jhansi (1854 ) were all annexed under this policy.
