the principle is majoritarianism.Majoritarian govt is a system of governance which signifies the belief that the majority community should be able to rule a country in whichever way it wants disregarding the wishes of the minority.

Features of majoritarian govt in Sri Lanka

1) The goverment recognised Sinhala as the only official language disregarding Tamil.

2) The govt followed preferential policies that favoured Sinhala applicants for university positions and goverment jobs.

3) A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism.

Impact :

1)All the govt measures, coming one after the other ,gradually increased the feeling of alienation among the Sri Lankan Tamils.

2)They felt that none of the major political parties led by Buddhist Sinhala leaders were sensitive to their language and culture.

3) They felt that the constitution and goverment policies denied them equal political rights, discriminated against them in getting jobs and other oppotunities.

4)As a result, the relations between the Sinhala and Tamil communities strained over time.
