Sher Shah of Sur (Farid Khan) was born in 1486 Sasaram, India and died on May 22, 1545, in Kalinjar, was the emperor of north India from 1540 to 1545.
The Two Administrative Reforms Of Sher Shah
Finance (Revenue):
- The major sources of the revenue of the government were the land revenue, unclaimed estate, tax on trade, mint, tax on salt, Khams which was one-fifth of the loot that was taken at the time of war, jizya and gifts from minor rulers, governors, aristocrats, merchants, etc.
- The crucial commodities of expense were the expenditures to strengthen the army, wages of civilian officials and the cost of the royal family and the Sultan.
- The regional taxes were known as Abwabs which were imposed primarily on various trade production and consumption processes and faculties and conveyance.
Justice:
- The Sultan was the highest authority of the judiciary in the state and his court was held by Sher Shah every Wednesday in the evening.
- Following the Sultan was the chief Qazi who was the Justice department head. There were minor Qazis in every region and all major cities.
- The cases that were concerned with the revenue were authorized by chief Munsifs in Sarkars and by Munsifs in Parganas whereas, the criminal cases were authorized by the chief Shiqdars and Shiqdars in their respective regions.
