There are a number of ways in which you can identify the impurities in edible oils. For example:
1. Test to detect the presence of cheap and poor quality edible oil in Vanaspati: Add washing soda to the vanaspati. Take the sample in a test tube and shake. The appearance of froth at the top indicates the presence of cheap oil.
2. Test to detect argemone oil in mustard oil: Add a little bit of nitric acid to a mixture of the oils. If some red colour appears, you can be sure of the presence of argemone.
