There are two types of nitrogen fixation:

- Physical nitrogen fixation

- Biological nitrogen fixation

In physical nitrogen fixation, under the influence of lighting and thunder nitrogen and oxygen gas reacts with air to form nitric oxide which later on oxidized to form nitrogen peroxide.

When rain falls, this nitrogen peroxide forms nitric acid and then when it mixes with alkaline radical, it forms soluble nitrates and nitrites.

Biological means of nitrogen fixation takes place with the help of nitrogen fixing bacteria which are present in the roots of leguminous plants.
