The current anti-poverty strategy of the government has a two-prolonged approaches i.e. promotion of economic growth and targeted anti-poverty programmes. Economic growth widens opportunities and provide resources needed to invest in human development.

The government has also introduced several schemes and policies to eradicate poverty:-

Pradhan Mantri Rozgar Yozana (PMRY):

  1. It was created in 1993.
  2. It planned to generate employment to the educated unemployed youths of the rural and town areas.
  3. It has introduced several industries and business to them.

Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP):-

  1. It was created in 1995.
  2. It planned to generate employment to the people of the rural people.
  3. Under it, 25 lac jobs have been introduced under the 10th five year plan.

Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yozana (SGSY):-

  1. It was introduced in 1999.
  2. It has targeted to bring the families below the poverty line (BPL) into self help groups through a mix of bank credit and government subsidy.

Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yozana (PMGY):-

  1. It was introduced in 1999.
  2. Central assistance have been provided to the state government for the upliftment of the living standards of the people.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA):-

  • It has been introduced in 2006.
  • It has aimed to provide 100 days of guaranteed job opportunity to ensure employment in rural areas.
  • It has also taken steps in case o sustainable development. It has taken steps to address the cause of deforestation, etc.
  • One-third of the jobs have been reserved for the women.
  • It has successfully helped to increase the average income of India. Fortunately, the average income became 132 (in 2013-14) from 65 (in 2006-07).
  • Initially, it was started in 200 districts and gradually covered more than 600 districts.

Antyodaya Anna Yozana (AAY):-

  • It has successfully guaranteed food security to the people of the rural regions.
  • It has introduced PDS (Public Distribution System).
