Digestive system: The system of organs responsible for getting food into and out of the body and for making use of food to keep the body healthy. The digestive system includes the salivary glands, mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, colon, and rectum.

The function of the digestive system is digestion and absorption. Digestion is the breakdown of food into small molecules, which are then absorbed into the body. The digestive system is divided into two major parts: The digestive tract (alimentary canal) is a continuous tube with two openings: the mouth and the anus.

Digestion is important because your body needs nutrients from food and drink to work properly and stay healthy. ... Your digestive system breaks nutrients into parts small enough for your body to absorb and use for energy, growth, and cell repair.

1. Digestive system is the integration of various organisms to meet the energy needs of an organism. This is achieved by converting food into energy.

2. Digestive system comprises of oral cavity (mouth), pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine.

3. Digestive system performs the function of ingestion, secretion, mixing, digestion, absorption and excretion.

4. Digestion starts in mouth where the food is chewed and broken down into small pieces. Salivary glands releases saliva which digests carbohydrates.

5. Through pharynx chewed food reaches from mouth to esophagus. From esophagus chewed food reaches stomach which contains HCl and other digestive enzymes required for digestion of food. It also acts as a storage tank for food.

6. The food from stomach enters small intestine which is all coiled and by the time food leaves small intestine 90% of nutrients are extracted from it. Enzymes required foe digestion in the small intestine are released from pancreas.

7. Large intestine absorbs water and a bit of nutrients and the waste is excreted through anal canal.
