The endopsperm arises after double fertilization. In coconut it remains suspended in nuclear form in the coconut milk in liquid stage, it is free nuclear divisons . After a while cellular form develops when cell walls are laid and gives rise to coconut meat.

Endosperm Development In Coconut

Nuclear Type

  • In nuclear type of endosperm development, primary endosperm nucleus (3n) undergoes free nuclear divisions.

  • It tends to form numerous nuclei without any immediate wall formation.

  • These nuclei are then arranged at the periphery.

  • As a result, a large vacuole is formed at the centre of the embryo sac.

  • Later the wall formation (cytokinesis) starts from periphery towards the centre, and a multicellular endosperm is formed.

  • Eg: Wheat, Rice, Sunflower

  • In coconut the wall formation remains incomplete.

  • So there is an outer multicellular endosperm, solid endosperm and inner free nuclear liquid endosperm in the centre.
