The main causes of the first war of Independence (revolt of 1857) were :

1.  Doctrine of lapse- Introduced by Lord Dalhousie,  it snatched the kingdoms of princes without legal heirs was one of the major causes of the first war of independence.

2. Economic cause- Exploitation of people in the form of taxes,  land revenue, etc was another main cause of first war of independence.

3. Social Causes- The British decided to do away from its policy of non-interference in the matters of the socio-religious life of the Indians like the Hindu Widow Remarriage Act (1856), Abolition of Sati (1829).

4. Discrimination in the army with Indian sepoys made the sepoys to turn against the British.

5. The immediate cause- Introduction of new rifles with a rumor of greased cartridges of fat of cow and pig.
