The diffusion of gases from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, especially the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and its environment. In plants, gas exchange takes place during photosynthesis. In animals, gases are exchanged during respiration.

  1. In leaves respiration takes place by diffusion of oxygen through stomata into the cells of the leaf from where the carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
  2. The exchange of gases in roots of a plant takes place by the process of diffusion. During diffusion, oxygen diffuses into the root hairs and passes into the root cells, from where the carbon dioxide moves out into the soil.
